Q: Why does Houston love its cars so much?
I don't get why people here feel that cars should be a part of their every day life. Why aren't alternative ways of getting around accepted better?
I live in suburban NW Houston, just on the outskirts of city limits. I'm 17 years old, and it's kinda expected that all teens drive at 16 and have a car.
Problem is: My parents are in some money troubles, and having a car means paying for premiums on insurance for teens, a good car, gas, permit/license and driver's ed, repairs, etc. How is one suppose to afford all this, during a recession?
I live along a stupid road, with old mom & pop stores and industrial factories. It's a new cookie cutter subdivision, built in a stupid place. For some reason, all the people here aren't my type for friends, as I never met them before, a good number are Asian, and they all don't seem sociable. My real friends (of many) live farther away near and in the Jersey Village area and nobody's coming here to give me a lift. My parents are too busy to give me a life.
So in the end, I have NO choice but to wait until my dad can scrounge up enough money to get a decent car. Which might take forever. Meanwhile my teen years are flashing by fast. This is the time in life where you are still kinda treated like a child, but you also get more responsibilities so you get the best of both worlds. That's gone when I'm 18.
As anyone knows in suburban Houston, other alternatives are bad b/c:
- Walking in the Texas heat, weeds (no sidewalks), litter, and dodging cars is lousy
- No bike lanes, so you go along the curb and get run over
- No public transport out of city limits
As you can see, there's a large disparity between the people who have (cars) and the have-nots (no cars). I notice that the people with cars are much more affluent, talented, and popular. As well as leading towards a better life than their non-car counterparts. There's not fair. But there's very unfair, and the chances of improvements in life for non-cars is slim.
Do you think a transportation reform should be in order? How about we designate a lane or two on the freeways to dedicate to light rail and bike lanes? Make zoning happen, and kill the ugly suburban sprawl. Make sidewalks everywhere. Improve the bus routes, and make buses more cleaner and nicer to go in. Put tolls on every freeway, and money made goes to more better transportation.
Would you agree that Houston needs reform in the way people get around? After all, it's just Point A to Point B. Nobody should love their cars or get so attached: it's just a tool. The city should be more fair to those of us who aren't so lucky to have one.
Do you guys not understand? How do I get to a job, if I don't have a car? It's so spread out, that any good convenient workplace for teens (like restaurants, the mall, etc.) are located several miles away from me. If you didn't notice, I don't have a car! How am I suppose to get there?
It's not that I don't want a job, I can't get a job if I can't get there!
Oh, and btw: Parents work, friends live far away to come over and give me a lift. So yeah, how am I suppose to get there? If you guys claim that you need a car in Houston, esp suburban Houston, to get around, how would I get to a job? Eh?
@Streaker: That's why I said "reforms"!
@Everyone: Sorry. I guess some people don't know what it's like where I live. I live on the OUTSKIRTS of Houston. I don't know anyone that walks miles and miles around out here. You're deemed crazy if you do.
I'm well aware life ain't always fair. However, life shouldn't be this unfair. I DON'T want a car. I NEED a car. Life in suburbia does not function without one.
Sure, I can walk. I do it all the time in fact. But like I said, it's INEFFICIENT. When you combine the Texas sun + no sidewalks + lots of weeds & ditches + litter, it's not a surprise why nobody walks out here often. Biking? Uh, there aren't bike lanes around here. I tried riding my bike yesterday, but it was really scary and it takes a long time to wait for a lane to clear to cross over.
I bet a lot of you are spoiled. You already had cars given by your parents or you had better access to jobs & friends then I do. You just love your cars b/c you know you can't live without 'em.
A: In Houston, you need a car. Period. The city is too spread out for practical public transit (unless you are retired and have a lot of time). Biking for miles in the Texas sun? Forget it, you can have a tax rate of 90% on everyone and build all the bike lanes you want. There will still be few bikers. Get an after school job and maybe you can contribute to paying for some of the gas, insurance premiums for your family car. Many families have just one car and the ppl just share the car. If you earn enough $, maybe you can pay some taxes that will help improve public transit.
