Q: What I have to pay for buying new car in New York?
My wife and I have lived in New York few months and we are thinking about buying a new car. We wanna know if we buy a small car like Hyundai Accent, what we have to know about owning?Which kind of tax we have to pay on the car? How much is the tax for the car we have to pay each year? We just know about the price of the car, but we have no idea about other expense for owning the car!

A: An easy place to start will be the local dealership, since most if not all of them also process the paperwork (title, plates, registration, inspection, etc) at the same time. You also should get a few quotes from insurance companies, depending on where you live (NYC versus somewhere upstate), as well as any extras, like parking garages, etc.

Q: What is the % of sales tax on used cars in New York?

A: depends on where in ny you are buying the car. there is a state sales tax and a county sales tax (county sales tax is differant in each ny county) and i think in nyc there is a city sales tax also

Q: How many cars can you register in new york state under one name??
i was told it is only 2, but im not sure if thats true in Suffulk county

A: You can register as many as you like, providing that you have the financial means to not only pay the registration fees, but the inspection & insurance requirements also. Not to mention if the vehicle has special requirements, such as NYC Motor Vehicle Tax, NYS Highway Use Tax Permits, International Fuel Tax Agreement Licenses.

Q: Why does the Authorities in charge of Transit allow so many cars into New York City?

A: Simple. The more gallons of gas that are sold in the city, the more money the "authorities" line their pockets with off of your tax paid on the gallon of gas. Then you have the oil cmpanies that raked in billions of dollars in profit, per company, last year They don't make as much on mass transit. Gas is about 35% tax, 55% cost, and 10% profit. Gas doesn't have to be $2.40 a gallon. So the answer your looking for is "greed". People have to travel and they know it.

Q: Do lots of people in new york city own cars, or is the public transportation reliable?

A: Cars are a luxury, not a necessity for the majority of new yorkers. Its cheaper and more convienent to just pay the $2 for the subway. You dont have to worry about parking or vandalism or ticketing from the NYPD transit cop/nazis. Another poster said it best, most new yorkers take whatever transportation they can that will get them there fastest. Bike, bus, train, copter, car, truck,....you name it, we take it. If you plan on living in manhattan, most of brooklyn, queens and bronx, i wouldnt buy a car unless you end up living in a transit "dead zone" or a place very far from the city itself. even then, you get stuck with expensive fuel and insurance costs. Cars are like having a kid in NYC, they need constant attention and money

Q: I live in Arizona and bought a car that is in New York, how do I cover it and get it out here?
I live in Arizona. I bought a car from my brother's girlfriends father who lives in New York. The car is a 1998 Ford Explorer and is registered in New York. We agreed to the deal over the phone. I don't have car insurance. A friend of mine agreed to drive the car out this weekend. I can't register the car until it passes an Arizona emissions test. How do I make sure the car is covered by insurance as it is driven cross-country? Should I have a third party (like my brother) go to the NY DMV and register the car for me? Is it true I can't insure the car with the owner's plates and registration as my friend drives it from NY to Arizona? / / Exquis8te07: Do you mean I can still have the registration under the Seller but get a type of "transit insurance" in the meantime? /

A: You should be able to get a liability coverage that will allow the vehicle to be covered like for a month and for the driver needs to be added to the temp policy for the trip.

Q: Do bicyclists in New York state need to follow the rules of the road set for cars?
For example, at a T-intersection with lights, would a bicyclist have to stop at the red light?

A: In theory yes. In practice no. ==== In reality, no bicycle stops and waits for the light when the traffic is clear (especially at small intersections). If you ever get to NYC (not NYS), you will see that everybody (besides the car) crosses the red light (bicycles, walkers, etc.) In theory, even the pedestrians are suppose to follow the traffic rules. But in NYC, they are crossing the redlight, jay-walking, etc. Good Luck...
