Q: Can Freshmen at University of Pittsburgh Main Campus have cars?
A: I'm not sure. I'm not sure you'll want one there. Everything is right there in Oakland, and that which is not, is a short bus ride away. It's easier to get around there on the busses. (in my experience) You can hop over to the southside, or downtown or strip district quicker on a bus than going to get your car, driving over, finding parking, paying for parking, and walking to your destination.

Q: Do I NEED a car to get around in Pittsburgh?
Am I thinking about moving to Pittsburgh and was wondering if a car is absolutely necessary. If I move, I will be working at the airport from 11pm-8am. I was wondering if the buses still run that late at night to the airport.
Thank You all in advance.
A: Yea, with the constant route cuts on the Port Authority and a strike lurking in the air, it's very convenient to own a car in pittsburgh. It's not a necessity, but it sure makes my life a lot more convenient, because some days it's just not dealing with the port authority!
Q: Buying a new car with bad credit in Pittsburgh?
I have approx. $6,000 in debt. I desperately need a new car. And when I say that, it's not that I just want one, I really do need one. My current car is falling apart, literally. Does anyone, who lives in the Pittsburgh area, know of any places that will finance a person with bad credit with very little or no money down? I'm willing to travel a little bit if need be, but preferably not more than about 50 miles.
A: You CAN get a decent car loan, even with bad credit. I've done it, but you'll have to look around. That's one of the BIG mistakes people make...just taking the first offer that's given to them when they go to the dealer. Be smarter than that.
WARNING: DON'T GO TO BUY A CAR WITHOUT HAVING THE LOAN FIRST. The auto dealers will eat you alive and give you a crappy rate. Shop around with lenders who specialize in bad credit car loans. It's a better option, you don't have to take what they're offering if you don't want it, and it's better than dealing with the car dealer's people.
There are usually some nationally based car loan companies who specialize in bad credit car loans who advertise on the page linked below...

Q: Is there any way to get to Youngstown from Akron Canton Airport or Pittsburgh int' airport by except a car?
I'm planning on having a trip to go to Youngstown, Ohio soon. I will be arriving at Akron-Canton airport or Pittsburgh int' airport but I haven't found a way to get Youngstown. I don't drive a car so I am not going to be able to drive all the way to youngstown so I would like to know if anybody knows about Public transportation from the either of these airports to Youngstown.( I prefer not Limo service and Taxi)
A: Why don't you just fly to Youngstown. One of those airports surely offers commuter flights. I would think that Akron Canton definitely does. Youngstown has an airport. http://www.yngwrnair.com/#
Q: What is the cheapest way to move cross-country? San Francisco to Pittsburgh?
My girlfriend is moving from San Francisco to Pittsburgh. She is driving her car cross-country, but we need to find the most efficient way to transport her larger belongings. I already found a couple of good ideas, but I thought I'd ask the Yahoo! Answers community if they had any suggestions. Thanks!
A: I moved from the deep south to the wild west, so I know what y'all are feeling. With gas as high as it is, it will only get worse as time goes by. We used a moving company called ABF. You pack it up in a pod and they put it on a truck and haul it to the destination. I moved 2700 miles and it costed me $967.00. They did all the transportation. I would check into them and they will even quote you.

Q: What are the parking codes for apartments within the city of Pittsburgh?
We live in the first floor apartment of a three story, three apartment house in Pittsburgh, PA. For all 3 tenants we are only provided one parking spot. Is there a rule or regulation that states that each unit must be provided with x number of spots? We do have on street parking but it is horrible and our cars keep getting hit. If anyone knows of any codes or where we could find them it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
A: You might want to check with the local Apartment Association or Housing Authority. Also the city of Pittsburgh might have zoning laws to assist with this. I know you can probably get the Housing Authority or Apartment Association number from an Apartment Directory like: http://www.apartmenthomeliving.com
Q: How much to police cars usually sell for when auctioned off by the local government of a large city?
I just saw an ad in the paper that Pittsburgh was auctioning off police cruisers and some other municipal vehicles. How much do the cop cars usually fetch at the auction? What kind of shape are they usually in? I'd like to know if it's worth checking out.
A: It depends on department policy on the vehicles.
If you're really lucky, you can find one used by the captain or undercover officers, that looks relatively normal, but still have the heavy-duty parts under the hood, and often, still have police lights under the grilles, but disabled. Those may have relatively lower mileage than the actual patrol vehicles.
The Crown Vics interceptors all have heavy-duty everything, extra sized transaxle, transmission cooler, radiator, shocks, alternators, and so on. Mileage is not the greatest, but if you drive them gently you MAY get 25 MPG on the freeway. Not bad for a vehicle that seats six.
Actual price depends on the condition and mileage of the vehicle, but should be quite low, $5000 or less.

A: Here is some advice,
As a fleet manager I have sold many new police cars to various municipalities near where I was working. I was also involved in coordinating the warranty work needed on these vehicles.
Unless your someone whom doesn't mind doing a LOT of maintenance and repairs on a car, I absolutely would not purchase a "retired" police vehicle.
Essentially they get the crap beat out of them. Even if they don't have a ton of miles on them, they were often in use 16 to 24 hours per day, six or seven days per week.
Many of the Crown Victoria's I sold developed transmission problems within a few months. Not because there was anything wrong with the transmissions but because officers would set at a speed trap with the engine running, transmission in drive, with their foot on the brake, for HOURS on end. After a while this tends to burn up the transmissions. And this type of treatment was typical.
High speed chases, bent rims, suspension damage, not to mention all of the drunks that have thrown up in the back... not exactly what I would want to depend on for everyday transportation.
Municipalities auction off these cars for only one reason. Buying a new police car is cheaper (and safer) than maintaining the old one. That should tell you something.
Hope this helps,
Mark H.
