Q: what are the direct objects in the sentences?
Sentences are:
1.My mother drove the car to Washington.
2.We saw the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial.
3.May I have that map?
4.It will show us the correct route.
5.She will drive the car to Mount Vernon.
A: The "test" for finding a direct object is to ask, what is the verb being done "to"?
What did your mother drive? She drove the car.
What did you see? You saw the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial.
Etc., etc.
When finding direct objects, just like when finding subjects, adjectives, articles, and conjunctions are not part of the direct object. Therefore, only name the noun (common or proper) when writing your answer in.
Q: What is the best way to get to Mount Vernon from DC (capital area)? 9 people with no car.?
Are there any tourist buses that will take us there and deliverus back?
A: There are three ways.
1. Sign up for a tour bus - There are a number, I'll include two here and you can check them out. Generally cost $40 to $60, depending on the line and what is included. This gets you there and back and I believe covers your admission to Mt. Vernon.
2. Take Metro - this is really easy, and will cost under $5 each way per person. Less if you have an all day pass anyway. You take the Yellow Line all the way to the Huntington Station (best way to pick it up from the Mall Area is at L'Enfant Plaza). At Huntington Avenue go to the South side of the station and take the Fairfax Conector Bus #101 toward Ft. Hunt. The bus will drop you directly in front of Mt. Vernon, and you can just go in to do the tour of the Mansion and Museum. This is the ONLY option where you can decide how much time you want to spend at Mt Vernon.
3. The most expensive, and possibly most fun, way to do Mt. Vernon is to take the Spirit of Washington Tour. It costs about the same as the bus ($44 per person) and lets you cruise down the Potomac to get there. Washington is a city where the rivers are very important, so getting out on them is a great way to see the city.
Hope this helps.
Q: What are our options for traveling from the Convention Center, to Arlington N. Cemetery, then Mount Vernon?
My husband and I will be visitig DC in May. We do not intend to rent a car. Our Inn is near the Convention Center. I want to go from our Inn to Arlington National Cemetery on a Wednesday morning. Then travel from Arlington National Cemetery to Mount Vernon late morning or early afternoon.
Which Metro lines do we use to get to Arlington?
What is a good way to travel from Arlington to Mount Vernon?
A: The only Metro line that goes to Arlington is the Blue Line. Catch the Yellow or Green line at the Mount Vernon station (a different Mount Vernon) to L'Enfant Plaza Station and transfer to the Blue Line in the direction of Franconia Springfield. There's a stop at Arlington Cemetery and a shuttle that will take you to the actual cemetery grounds.
As for getting from Arlington to Mount Vernon, I don't recommend you go late in the day as Mount Vernon closes at 5 p.m. I understand there is a shuttle bus from the Huntington Station at the end of the Yellow Line. You would take the Blue Line from the Arlington Cemetery station (towards Franconia Springfield), and transfer at the next station, which is Pentagon, to the Yellow Line. You can actually transfer anywhere between Pentagon and King Street to the Yellow Line.
It might be better to go to Mount Vernon in the morning--you can take the Yellow Line straight down--and then Arlington Cemetery in the afternoon, transfering to the Blue Line (in the direction of Largo) anywhere between King Street and Pentagon. Keep in mind that after sunset, the trains don't stop at Arlington and just express through between Pentagon and Rosslyn.
But I really suggest you do this on two different days, if possible, just so you can see everything you want to.
