Q: ANyone want to critiue a descriptive paper?
Any Given Friday
Clock hits seven. Crowd Beginning to roar. The sound near deafening. Rainfall so cold it began to feel like hail. Each football player about to embark on a physically draining journey. Not many people get a chance to compete in a sport they worship, are given the ability to please their family and friends. This was the year I intended to do so.
As I arrived in the parking lot of Forest Hills Central High School, standing five feet nine, Randy Moss covering my shoulders, and the wind carrying my featherlike stature, I realized this was a chance to start the new season with a bang. The field muddy like the everglades. Sun not in sight. Every perspiring body glancing at me, with an expression on their faces as if they were telling me, “Grab me some water.” I was still searching for my stamp of approval on the team, and a week later, the football team was my new home.
Opening day of practice was tough and awkward. I compiled a long list of accomplishments, from the vast array of dropped passes, to the tackles that me hand failed to grasp. My morale at an all time low, I felt like an outsider looking in. I knew I wouldn’t start the first game, but hopefully I could reach the field before the clock struck zero.
The next day was crucial in developing for any football player, the first practice that we strapped on the shoulder pads and began the actual workouts, or as we referred to it, “hell camp.”
Ten minutes into our first contact drill, my hand felt like it was stabbed by a hundred thumbtacks, my thumb numb, wind carrying my finger through the air like an old American flag. I thought nothing of the injury at the time, just a quick infliction that would evaporate in no time, so I reached for my gloves and continued onward.
The greatest feeling in the world is going to sleep after a crucial day of battering your body. Head laid on the pillow, I felt like a deer who just got hit by an oncoming car. The next morning my thumb, red as an apple, I began to suffer the feeling of a button dangling on a string. This was the last practice before the big game, the first game of my senior season, and just like many of my teammates, I was excited for the events to unravel.
After practice, we all departed to the coach’s house for team bonding and a pork roast, and as the linemen called it, “dinner for the seniors.”
I left the extravagance, anxiously waiting for tomorrow night. I felt like my stomach was tied into a huge knot, desperately trying to break the loophole.
Over the previous year, I had built myself a nickname that would stick with me for the next two years, “Randy Moss.” The reason I had been blessed with this nickname, was my work ethic, I was known to have a vast amount of talent, but used it sparingly. So it was only fitting I was graced with the jersey of my role model. The numbers and the name on the jersey meant more than a logo. It was the source of pride for the team and the school, so we all were expected to live up to this billing.
We all entered our locker room, every living body shaking as coach gave use a riveting speech to crack a new season. He informed us that one of our teammate’s girlfriend’s father had lost his life in the Iraq war. All shocked, teary eyed, consoling our fallen teammate, we knew this was more than a game: this contest was for our friend and her father. The initial JF on the back of the helmets, symbolizing the fallen soldier. Hand and hand we took the field, ready for the battle to begin.
The kicker rushed to the ball, launching the leather into a onward spiral. Soaring through the air, the pigskin symbolized the start of the 2005 Ranger Football season had just begun. From the opening whistle, each individual examining the field, could tell it was our game to win. We ended the firs quarter on a downfield rampage, scoring in less than five minutes.
At halftime the light bulbs on the scoreboard read twenty-one to seven. The pendulum had swung over to the confident visitors, the game had token a turn for the worse. The other side had no bruises, and an onlooker could tell by the cleanliness of their jerseys, that they had gained the momentum. As we sat in our locker room, in entered Jennie, the seventeen year old girl who lost her father early that morning. She dropped down to her knees and gave us a message that will be engraved in our hearts forever. She informed the team of the love of football, her father had gained, and the passion he brought to the football program. Begging each player for a victory, we promised to pass her the game ball at the end of the night
We built of the energy, scoring four straight touchdowns to push the lead to forty-five to twenty-one. In the fourth quarter, the stadium became half empty, the game was well in hand. Coach hollered my name, pointing me onto the patch of the field he wanted me to zone.
I had six minutes to put my mark on this game, I dove to the scene of the crime, quickly gathering three tackles. By some means I did not feel satisfied. I wanted something massive to happened, and the next play caught me by surprise. To my dismay, the visiting quarterback dropped back to pass. I hastily back pedaled and as I looked up the leather dropped into my arms. I was as shocked as the quarterback, I ran as fast as my legs could take me. End zone in sight, I accelerated hoping to reach the promised land. Twenty, ten, I could not be stopped, “Bam,” my knees pounded the turf, arms stretched six feet from the pylon. Grass stains covering half my mouth, although I was still able to crack a smile. I scampered back to the sideline with a sense of pride that I had never experienced before. This was the first time I didn’t get yelled at by my coaches after a play. My teammates, jumped toward me like a stampede of gazelle, forgetting the match was not over. We completed the final play, and jumped into the air. This was a huge victory for everyone that was a fan of our football team, and most importantly, for the squad.
As we handed the game ball to Jennie, tears covering the pigskin, we quickly departed with a sense of pride. August 6th, 2005, was a date that all fifty-two men would hold onto as they progressed through life. Not only did that night make my entire love for football evolve, but it taught me many things, one of them being that there were important matters that overshadowed a game we played for pleasurable experiences. Another lesson I learned from that night was no matter how low you get, you must always put one-hundred percent into your work, and one day it just might pay off.
A: While I understand your use of the short, succinct sentences in the beginning to draw the reader in, they should stay only at the beginning as they are distracting throughout the rest of the story.
Also, go back and check your tenses of your verbs. You vary on your verb tenses throughout which makes it very difficult to read. Stick with either a present (happening now) scenario to put the reader "in" the action, or a consistent past tense, a recount of the occurrences.
I would also put the line "August 6th..." as the start of a new paragraph. It would stand well as a summary and conclusion after-the-fact of the story.
Q: Postcode or region searchers on websites?
Hi All, when you use some websites they are able to find items (cars, houses, things for sale, etc) by postcode or region – how does the website use/refer to the latest post code or region information?
For example, when I use a property finding website you can enter a post code such as ‘SE23’ or a region such as ‘Forest Hill’ and then enter in some more criteria like 2 bed house with a max price and then run the search – how does the website know of the latest up to date post code or region information? (I guess there may be more post codes or regions being developed frequently).
Does the website have to pull/review information from an external data source (ie, a Royal Mail website or something), or do you have to buy the information on a frequent basis and load it to your website’s database, or…..how does it work? Baffles me. Thx in advance! K
A: These sites use geo data (cf. google maps) - having the geo coordinates of a location (e.g. identified by a ZIP code) it's not so difficult to program a "search around" fuction e.g. with php.
There are several sources for such geodata, free and also commercial ones.
Q: Where can I donate used clothing in Forest Hills, NY?
I have a laundry bag FULL of used clothing. Everything is on good conditions, some of it has barely been used. I don't have a car to take it to the city and it's too much to take on any public transportation. Is there any place around Forest Hills or Rego Park where I can drop off these clothes?
A: I'm not 100% sure but I think that there is a clothing drop off right by the home depot on metropolitan and woodhaven
Q: Are there car services in Manhattan that charge per ride, not hour?
Don't want to wait in the rain for a cab, and most limo services seem to have a 2 hour minimum. I live downtown, and need a car service to Forest Hills.
Thanks!
A: Sorry I think you'r outta luck!!

Q: How Much does it cost to buy a car in NY?
Hello, I am going to commute to school in around 3-4 months and I need a 4wd sedan. 4WD mostly because the snow removal around my house is lousy and I really cant miss my classes which are a 25 mile highway roundtrip. PLus I snowboard a lot so an AWD vehicle looked good after years of getting stuck with the van. So I decided on a 2001 Audi A6 for about $ 12,000. Its clean, much more fuel efficent than my family minivan, and does what I need it to do. I have enough money to cover the Insurance and gas but I cant make enough cash quickly enough to cover the vehicle in time for school so I heard about college loans in which one can allocate funds to their choosing my main need is transportation so I figured with all the school finances squared away I would purchase the car with a loan. My problem is how much I need to target for the total cost of the car I live in Forest Hills new York and would like to have the loan cover the car so that includes all DMV charges and Taxes. Thanks
A: you can get a loan to cover all the fees, taxes and charges. but with gas prices so high, make sure you can afford to operate the vehicle.
Q: Why aren't Californian hills more densly forested to offset carbon emmisions from cars?
Being new to the San Diego area Im surprised to see miles and miles of land with not enough trees (in my opinion) while there are cars and cars e/where...wouldn't it be wise to forest as much as possible to offset global warming?
A: It is not as simple as it sounds.
"Tropical forests have a net cooling effect because they take up carbon and increase cloudiness, which helps cool the planet," The tropics receive more sunlight, so they have more energy to convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into biomass. That is why tropical forests are better at storing carbon than their counterparts at mid-to-high latitudes.
Some trees such as those grown for pulping in paper manufacture take in carbon dioxide and generate oxygen very efficiently when young but slow and even reverse that as they age. Therefore trees for paper production which have a short life cycle might be a good idea.
But sadly many trees are not so efficient and in the West are actually counter productive. There is also the problem of water uptake by the trees. Water resources are already under strain in many places.
So there is no simple solution. Any idea for planting trees would need close scientific scrutiny to ensure the right trees were planted and that they were not actually causing more problems!
Q: Epping forest?
please tell me excatly where Hangmans Hill in epping forest or hainult forest is? the weird hill that ya car roles up!!! need excat directions if anyone knows or a postcode wanna go there for halloween help me!!
A: "For all u lunatics who are looking for Epping forest hangman's hill here is some info which might come handy. I for instance have spent numerous nights in Epping forest just to find the damn spot, but alas to no avail. And spent numerous hour on the web to find it but could not find any info on it.
SO here is how u get there …
From A406 take the high road exit
Then travel on it towards hangman's hill Epping Forest
This road becomes Wood fordgreen, continue traveling u will reach Epping new road.
Take the first left from the round about to Cross road towards high beach. Continue traveling u will pass a cemetery and a huge church. Cross road then becomes Aevy lane. U have to find a triangular type of spot and the best hint for the location is there is a farm right ahead of it like the forest ends there. From avey lane turn towards pynest green lane.
This turn is the hangman's strip where u park ur car and see it move up the hill.
And take a GPS along trust me it helps a lot."
Q: What year did the kelly sisters die?

A: Who are the Kelly sisters?
Q: LOOKING FOR: Apartment near St. John's University - Law School - Kew Gardens? Flushing? Forest Hills?
My wife and I might be headed to Queens and we are curious as to what neighborhoods are in commuting distance to St. John's University. We are selling our cars and would be relying on public transportation. Close to subway a MUST as I will most likely be working in Manhattan. Any information would be great!
PART II: Any local brokerage companies? I am sick of craigslist and the voice and would be willing to pay a brokerage fee for the right place. THANKS!
A: Cool I live within 5 minutes of St.Johns...If you have money to spend, I suggest looking around Holliswood/Jamaica Estates . Super close to St.Johns, beautiful neighborhoods with lots of public transportation all over the place and very close to the F train which goes all over Manhattan. Other than that, the places you named, Flushing, Forest Hills etc. are nice places to look as well but more congested.
Q: Here we go again. Is this a transmission problem?
Had already posted q. about Ford '91 Escort. Battery kept draining overnight after parking. Mechanic could NOT find any shorts after several days looking a few times too. Battery discharges overnight every few days overnight w.o9 warning. Then, the car's engine started turning off suddenly over the past few days while driving: Engine started to rev down, only to come "on" again suddenly a few seconds later. Is this a transmission problem? If not, what? If so, where near 11415 to get it fixed not expensive but good job. If not a tranny problem, where to fix it properly somewhat near Kew Gardens or Forest Hills, Queens, NYC 11415, or 11375 or on Metropolitan Ave. in Middel Village, perhaps somewhere...Frustrating...now months this way.
A: What about checking the alternator it will drain your battery too!!
Q: so uh, are these dreams connected and if so, do they mean anything meaningful?
there is alot more to it but these will do, i wrote like 15 pages of dreams. some short some long depending how much i remembered, oh and i just saw alot of typing errors. but if you can tell me what it means i will appreciate it
A: First, I must say that your dreams were very interesting and beautiful.
Women, Bikes, and the colors blue and red are what I see as recurring. Places once familiar, but then transformed paths of forested and dark secrets-things not known to you...yet. Trying to look out and over the box of the familiar.
Beauty is important to you. Your dreams are vivid. Women are important to you and I will take a chance and intuitively trust that they figure predominantly in your life. Bikes are important to you. You describe the bikes as objects of beauty and invitation to freedom from the known-represented by your neighborhood. Once you accept the invitation, you are transported to an altered awareness of your neighborhood-possibly a symbol of your subconcious self. But, to get familiar with this "shadow" neighborhood is a little daunting. Don't be afraid.
I would guess that you are a very masculine person. Red is a color of danger in our culture, but also of courage and triumph. Blue is a color of the sky-high thinking outside of the box and intellect. And blue is the ocean-water, which is a symbol of awareness outside of oneself, physcic feeling and emotion.
Your dreams show you are growing still, I think in a delightful way,no matter your chronological age. You are open to making new discoveries of yourself-that familiar neighborhood. It would be nice if you were a painter and could put one of your dreams to canvas. Thank you for sharing your dream. I hope I helped.
Q: Parking in Jamaica Plain?
I'm moving to JP this summer and my girlfriend and I need to bring our cars. I do not want to change my permanent address to Boston. I hear JP has ample street parking, can I get by with visitor parking? Will I likely need to rent a parking spot? What do people do when there is a parking ban in the winter if they don't have their own spots?
We are looking mostly near Forest Hills, and on South Huntington Ave. We are also looking near the pond.
Thanks!
A: It has a lot of resident permit parking. You get a resident permit sticker from city hall. I think it only costs $1 (or used to). You will need a utility bill with your name and address on it. I think there is plenty of parking as long as you have a resident sticker.

Q: What's a good car service to use in Forest Hills, Queens?
New to the area and need a car service in a few days to get to La Guardia. Thanks.
A: The best thing to do would be to check your local Yellow Pages (the smaller book that should be just for Forest Hills and some surrounding areas) for car services. Then just call a few places and ask for their prices to the airport and their availability (will they be able to accommodate all your luggage, how long would they take to pick you up, do they operate at all hours, etc.)
Also, you can see which Car Service vehicles seem to operate in your area by seeing which pass by and give them a call as well.
It shouldn't run you too much to go to LaGuardia from where you are located, but some places may have a set price to the airport.
