Q: Why are new cars cheaper in NYC? I live in Albany, is it worth it to drive down to new york?
Im trying to find out why the same new cars are 3 or 4k cheaper down the city?
A: I have no idea. Probably because not everyone drives? Because the subway is more convenient and much more cheaper and not everyone has a car here so it's much more cheaper because not a lot of people drive.

Q: Do cars from New York Satisfy California Smog Requirements?
I might purchase a vehicle that was originally sold in New York. Would it have the necessary equipment to pass California emissions standards?
The vehicles I'm looking at are BMW's made after 2001.
A: You don't actually need special equipment on the car-- I bought a Saturn in MD, moved to CA and the car passed smog. I think the trick is that CA simply has stricter air quality standards than most states--I'd expect that a relatively new BMW should be able to pass without difficulty, but you might want to check with the CA DMV.
Q: What is the best used cars dealer in New York City?
I would like to buy a minivan and I live in NY. Could anybody suggest me good and reliable car dealer in NY city?
Thank you
A: What I recommend are two things:
Go on newyork.craigslist.org look there and when you find one BEFORE you buy it head out to Eddie's auto mechnaic on Queens Boulevard right along the 7 line and have him check it out with the seller at hand- best thing you can do and will save you aggravation in the future
OR
Head to Major World out on Northern Boulevard- ridiculos selection of cars for the city- as in THOUSANDS and pick one out- great credit options. My dad bought an E-Class Benz there and I almost got a gorgeous Jeep Cherokee- don't get swindled- we bargained down thousands on the price- good luck

in NY /NJ there is a massive supply of used cars

Last I checked it was three; what are the requirements for a dealer's liscense in New York state other than some paperwork-I had the understanding that a county approved lot was required?
A: if you buy and sell them 1 at a time there is no limit.
if you have a few on you lot/premises you can only have three. you only need a dealers lic. if you plan on doing it on a lot. like a gas station or a dealer type lot. see below for more info

Q: When you search do you type in Cars in NY or Cars in New York?
From what it shows in yahoo typing new york is more popular in searches...??? I doubt thats the case but maybe im wrong.
Well I have to decide between the 2 to optimize my site with. so NY or New york. it's Rochester NY or Rochester New york.
A: I sometimes do both. I'll try one way seeing if I can find what I'm looking for and then try it the other way.
Q: Why do New York City police cars blip their sirens a lot at night?
I've noticed on my visits to New York City that during late at night when there isn't much traffic on the streets, the police cars will sort of 'blip' their sirens only when going through intersections. So I would be laying in my bed and hear a lot of "bwoop.............bwoop............ ....bwoop."
Is this just some sort of rule the NYPD have to follow to combat against contributing to late night noise pollution?
A: When law enforcement is running lights and siren or code, we are required to run both when moving. I would assume that they have adopted a manner of just using it when approaching intersections to warn pedestrians or cross traffic that they are entering the intersection and to beware.
It's really a them being nice and not runnning full sirens. Most states laws require the siren to be on, but many of us will only use it in intersections and when overtaking cars during night to be nice and let people sleep!
Q: Where can I find pictures of the first subway cars in New York?
I'm looking for pictures of the first subway cars, or early Subway cars in New York.
Please help!
Thanks!
A: As a Charter member of the NY Transit Museum I feel that I have to correct one of the answers.
The NYTM does NOT have a subway car from 1904. It does have BRT elevated cars (wooden) from 1903 but those never operated in service in the subway. The early IRT car in the Museum is from 1916.
One of the earliest cars used in the subway is not in the museum's collection. August Belmont's private subway car "Mineola" is in the collection of the Shoreline Trolley Museum in Brandford/East Haven, CT (I am a member there too). http://www.bera.org . Unfortunately the condition of the car is very bad that it is kept under cover in a car barn. The cost of restoration is way to much.
www.nycsubway.org is a good source for pictures of early subway cars. Pictures of the first IRT cars can be found here:
http://www.nycsubway.org/articles/irtbook_ch8.html
http://www.nycsubway.org/articles/theymovedthemillions2.html
BTW - a great deal of the information on Wikipedia regarding the NYC Subway came from www.nycsubway.org. You will see the text is very identical on both sites (nycsubway.org has been around longer than Wikipedia)
Q: Which area to find an Apartment in New York and bring our cars or not?
We are going to relocate to New York. The work area will be around City Colledge of New York and Comlumbia University. Anyone has any suggestions about which area to rent for an affordable apartment? Nearby or about 30 minutes commute one-way are both ok, I tried Craigslist but get very confused about the location names ...
Also, shall we bring our cars to New York? We have two now. Shall we bring one or none of them? Just a bit not sure whether it is ok to go to work or buy grocery without a car...
Thanks a lot!
By affordable I mean about $2000 per month for a one-bedroom. Now I am giving up the idea to bring our cars with us:-)
Thanks a lot!
A: "Affordable" in NYC is a matter of opinion. How much are you going to make and out of that how much are you willing to spend on rent? If you've got the means right now to have 2 cars, I'm going to assume you're a fairly established professional. I would suggest to you Morningside Heights, the Upper West Side, or Clinton/Hell's Kitchen/Midtown West in Manhattan. You might also consider Riverdale in the Bronx. There are good places to live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and in the other boroughs, but they'll generally involve 1 or 2 subway transfers.
If you plan on living in Manhattan, banish the thought of bringing a car with you. NOW. Unless you can afford to pay between $600-$1000/month to garage it. Most people in NYC get by without a car because we have one of the most extensive public transit systems in the world. Also, supermarkets deliver so you don't need a car for that either and you can get a taxi for any other large item you need to carry.
