Q: What time do the cable cars in San Francisco start runing?
We're planing to go to San Francisco and want to avoid all the traffic and confusion of one-way streets, so we're going on foot and by trolley car. What time do the first cars start running (in hopes of avoiding a line)? What time do they stop?

A: The Cable Cars start running at 6am. The very first car leaves the barn at 5:45 am. The cars stop running at about 12am. If you want to avoid lining up at the turn table at Powell and Market, Bay and Taylor and Bay and Hyde, go one block from the turn table and wait at the station there. (only do that when the line is longer than 45 minutes wait. The cars each depart from the stations about every 10-15 minutes. The price is $5 one way, and $11 all day. Be sure to have a great stay in San Francisco.

Q: How many cars are in San Francisco?
I need the number of cars owned by residents of San Francisco, or the amount of carbon dioxide those cars pump into the atmosphere in a given amount of time. It's for a school project on carbon emissions. Please also put the source you got your figure from so I can list it in my bibliography and check the fact myself. Thank you!

A: A million a day :)

Q: Which Enterprise branch has the largest selection of cars in San Francisco?

A: i worked for enterprise both in the rental & the car sales division. the largest selection surely goes to the airport locations. though if you are talking of ones in sf (& no other surrounding area), the one in the sunset (19th/stonestown) has the most. though if you're looking to find a car, you can make a reservation at any location. they all share the cars. it's usually best if you go with the smaller branches for quicker service. if you were looking to purchase, i would recommend the san leandro location as they have the most inventory & are closest to the bay area headquarters.

Q: Cost of cable cars in San Francisco?
Wondering how much it costs to get on the cable cars in San Francisco? and how does the conductor collect the payment? do you pay him/her like you do on most city buses or does he/she come around and get the payment? thanks.

A: It's $5.00 each way. You can buy an all-day pass for about $10 if you're going to be taking more than two rides. The conductor comes around to get the payment. He has the uncanny ability to note who is new (as people are getting on and off all the time).

Q: Are there any plans to close any streets in San Francisco to cars?

A: It has already happened. East end of John F Kennedy Dr. (from Stanyon to Crossover Drive) in Golden Gate Park has been closed on Sundays and more recently -- for a trial period of six months -- on Saturdays as well.'' http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=m&q1=Golden+Gate+Park%2C+CA&trf=0&lon=-122.475178&lat=37.76912&mag=3 You can still drive a car from East & West on Martin Luther King Drive on weekends. That will take you past the entrance to Stow Lake and also to the Japanese Tea Garden, Museums and Arboretum.

Q: Are dogs allowed on the cable cars in San Francisco?
I really need to know by June 19th, so the sooner and more specific, the better!!!

A: Service animals are always allowed. During non-commute hours (9 AM to 3 PM, and after 7 PM), a muzzled and leashed pet dog may be allowed. However, the operator has full discretion as to whether there's enough space to accommodate the dog. All other pets must be carried in small closed containers. A fare equal to the owner’s ($5.00 for cable cars) must be paid for each non-service animal.

Q: Is there a place in San Francisco that will rent cars to 18 year olds?
I know it is possible, so don't post that it is not. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. BTW its for business purposes so a car is a necessity.

A: I have to say that, in the state of California, it is illegal for an individual under the age of 21 to rent a vehicle. That being said, since it is for business purposes, I would try asking your supervisor to write you a letter that states that you require a vehicle for business. After you have that, I would contact the airport/bus station/train station you will be arriving in to see what kinds of rental offices are available, tell them your situation, fax them the letter and see what you can work out. I think that your best bet would be with a non-corporate, privately-owned company, but since I do not know exactly where you will be coming in I can't give you any specific recommendations (sorry).

Q: What is the easiest way to get from Sacramento to San Francisco without car?????
What is the easiest way to get from Sacramento to San Francisco without car?? by any trains or busses???

A: There is a greyhound station in downtown Sacramento (right by the Downtown Plaza)...the main greyhound station in SF is near where the bay bridge meets the bay (in the financial district). Tickets are pretty cheap...I would say that this is your best option.

Q: San Francisco Cable Cars - how long is the ride?
We will be in San Francisco on a short visit and are trying to fit too much in. I want to ride the cable car from Powell Street to Fisherman's wharf and get there in time for a tour that starts at 1:15 pm. If we are late, we miss it. We'll have lots of time afterwards to checkout the Wharf area, but want to spend as much time as possible in Union Square that morning as we likely won't get back there. So how much time do I have to allow to get on and ride the cable car back to Hyde st?

A: To get to fishermans wharf from Union Square, there are a few things you should know. +The intersection of Powell and Market Streets is EXTREMELY busy due to it having SEVERAL subway and other rail stations at the Powell Street Station, just to the south of the cable car turnaround, under Hallidie Plaza. There is also one of CALIFORNIAS LARGEST SHOPPING MALL at the same intersection along with several other attractions. +There will most likely be a long line of people extending from the front of the GAP building around the turnaround and back up Powell Street past the large banners (you will see when you get there). +The cable car line you are wanting to ride is also frequented by locals as well as tourists due to the line going through a mainly residential area of San Francisco, which means the cable car MIGHT BE CROWDED with people probably the entire length of the trip. +The cable car does make MANY STOPS during its trip and is forced to travel up fairly STEEP HILLS AND INCLINES, which might slow the trip down a couple of minutes if the weather is bad. SO NOW TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION= Get to the Powell Street turnaround by AT LEAST 12:00 to get through the line and navigate your way through the crowded streets (lunch hour crowds). If you are ON THE CABLE CAR by at least 12:30 you should be able to arrive at the Hyde Street turnaround by 12:45-1:00. The extra time will let you get to Fishermans wharf from the Hyde Street turnaround. And by the way, wear a slightly heavy jacket, but one that s easy to take off...San Francisco weather is extremely variable throughout a 24-hour time-span. And fishermans Wharf always gets a COLD MOIST SEA BREEZE from the Pacific and the fog along the beaches, so the jacket is necessary.

Q: How nessesary is a car in San Francisco?
I'm going to be flying in to San Francisco and renting a car and driving to San Diego where Iwe will be flying out of 10 days later. We're spending our first two days in San Francisco. We would like to be able to get around and be able to see the sights. We were going to rent the car at the airport but now we're thinking that if we were going to rent the car and just keep in parked for two days, then it might be worth saving some money and taking a cab to my hotel and if it's feasible, we'd just take public transportation around.

A: When you arrive in SF: First visit the SF visitor's information center at Powell and Market St. Go down the escalator and past the Cable Car Coffee shop. The center is a store space under the sidewalk a few feet away. A car can be a headache and not necessary unless you plan to leave the city and visit other counties. Parking can be expensive. There are also parking restrictions -- varies by neighborhoods, time of day and the days of the week -- so you would need to read the signs posted on the street if you should want to park a car. http://www.bart.gov/guide/overview/overview.asp From the airport: Take Bart to SF if you are arriving when the BART is running to the airport. (Check the airport schedule on-line now -- and then pick up a schedule at the BART terminal when you arrive at the airport). Otherwise, take a cab. There are many car rental agencies downtown in the Union Square area. You might want to visit one to reserve it ahead of time for your departure. http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mfares/passports.htm http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mfares/fareinfo.htm http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mmaps/indxmaps.htm Use the Muni to get around SF. You might want to buy a passport, could be cheaper and a lot more convenient. Ride the cable car and the Muni Metro underground, or the old vintage buses which run on Market St. or the bus line that runs along the Embarcadero.. Adult ticket is $1.50 (always ask for a transfer which good for 90 min. and sometimes good for several hours-- depends on the time showing where the ticket is torn off by the driver). Have a great time in SF. Weather has been beautiful but always bring a jacket with you.

Q: What are the choices I have to find a deal on an affordable rental car in San Francisco. Rent a Wreck?
I guess a pass will get me around the city of San Francisco, no rental car needed. But to travel down the coast or north maybe to the redwoods or to the wine country Should I rent a car? Are there alternative rental car copmpanies? What about the green tortoise? Do they do day trips anywhere? thanks for HELP and sugestions.

A: Rent a Wreck is OK. I'd also look at City Rent a Car; I've found they have reasonable rates.

Q: How realistic is it to cross the US from New York to San Francisco by car.?
How long would it take and is it possible to rent a car in New York and leave it in San Francisco.

A: It's extremely realistic. Find I-80 on the other side of the George Washington Bridge and stay on it until you hit San Francisco Bay. If you drive like I do -relentlessly- you can do it in in under 72 hours. If you drive like a normal human being add 24 hours onto that. If you want to see an unrealistic number; look-up mapquest's time from SFO-JFK ha ha ha funny - even on meth you couldn't do that. My personal best coast to coast time is 56 hours and that was chemically aided . As far as rental cars go ;No problemo The cheapest place to rent any car is anywhere but an airport location. This little trick can save you 50% on rentals In most of America that trick always works in NYC metro area it will save you under 10 % Ballpark figure $600.00 for a 1 week rental and anything over a 4 day rental costs the same as a week Vehicle of choice would be a Lincoln Town Car but they usually don't rent them in NYC w/ unlimited mileage so the Mercury Grand Marquis is the next best choice-Hertz rents them Small V-8 , rear wheel drive , personally verified 25+mpg at highway speeds Absolutley perfect car for hauling ashes down American highways all day and all night long at 75-90 mph Just a nice roomy ,comfortable ,safe, stable automobile that has good 65-90 mph acceleration.aka passing speed Don't rent Cadillacs-they burn premium gas

Q: Why are all commercials filmed in san francisco?
If you pay really close attention to tv commercials, you might notice that ALOT of them are filmed in san francisco. From car commercials to phone commercials, the majority of them are filmed in san francisco. Why is this?

A: Many commercials, TV shows, and movies "set" in San Francisco are actually filmed in L.A. (and sometimes Vancouver). Much to the annoyance of local actors. Although the special effects wizards do a fairly good job with CGI and blue screen, they can't change the climate completely. And if you are observant, you can usually figure out where they did the shot. - If fake San Francisco looks atypically sunny and bright (Charmed, Monk, Star Trek, Party of Five, various sitcoms)... it's actually L.A. - If fake San Francisco looks rainy, gritty, and oddly frozen over (Sliders, X-Men, most cop movies)... it's actually Vancouver.
