Q: How to safety/e-test cars in ontario.?
hi ive got an old 93 civic i wanna sell..
can someone please tell me the steps involved with actaully gettin the car safetied/etested, and the steps involved in legally selling the car.
how much does each step cost?
also, if the car is fine, and nothing needs to be done, how much does the safety certificate cost?
thanks a lot.
A: There is a kit available from the ministry for selling your car. You have to fill it in. cost was $10.
Safety cert is done at any garage with the green Ministry sign in the window. Usual cost was near $40 last time I got one (probably more now). Garage can charge higher.
E-test can be done at a place with the sign stating that they do it. Cost was $38.
Note that any parts needed replacing found during the safety must be done at a garage where you get a receipt to prove the work was completed (usually many get it done at same place as safety done at).
Get the safety done at a reputable garage (not crappy tire as all mechchanics are on commission and want to sell parts), one you know they are up front and as honest as you can find. Beware of anyone saying Oh we can do that work for $200 cash instead of $300 with a bill (plus tax). Means they are scamming you for something. You can be found liable for a car found to have problems after you sell it. Very few garages are ever charged or convicted for false certificates.

Q: is it true that if you upgrade your cars engine it will be in pounded in Ontario?
i want to get a car and upgrade it mostly a Nissan skyline and race it on a track but i heard that in Ontario if you do any modifications to your car it will be an illegal car and get inpounded?
A: No. 50km over the speed limit on Ontario streets deems you to be street racing. once caught you no long own your vehicle. That is what the track is for. Have fun.
Q: tax on used cars in ontario do they use retail or wholasale value?
when calculating the tax on the car
A: When you purchase from a dealer, you have to pay 8% PST and 5% GST on the vehicle price retailed + administration fee. When you purchase from a private person you only pay 8% PST at the License Bureau according to their Red Book Value which is usually higher than retail. A little secret...Dealerships can give you perception of value on a vehicle on a form you can receive fron the License Bureau. I hope this helps..
Cheers
Q: Insurance needed on Ontario cars ?
Is it illegal to drive in Ontario, Canada without insurance?? ok, me and my friend were driving to the gym last night when we accidentally rear ended our friends who were in the left hand turn lane infront of us. My friend was driving and couldn't stop because the brakes were absolutley drenched from driving through some enormous and unavoidable puddles in terrible weather. Our friends in front of us who he hit have insurance on their car but my friend who hit them has no insurance. We didn't file a police report or anything because we all know each other, but the insured car's insurance company phoned the rear-ender last night with a claim of approx $5000 on the hit car. No injuries. What happens next ??
A: its illegal to drive anywhere without insurance.

Q: Do I have to pay tax on top of cars in Ontario. What?
I just built myself a fantastic Dodge Challenger... http://www.dodge.com/en/2009/challenger/ and it only costs $30,000 are they crazy... Is there tax to pay on top or is that the final figure.. If so How much tax needs to be paid on the car?
I have used the Canadian website and it appers to be only $34,000 What taxes and other costs should I expect?
A: The prices quoted on car manufacturers' websites do not include tax, title, registration, or whatever other fees and charges your local dealer or government can dream up. So, yes, you have to pay tax.
On top of that, you should be aware that the website you used gives prices in US dollars.

Q: Why are electric powered cars and bikes not allowed on Ontario roads?
It makes the E-test look even more like a money grab.A bit hypocritical, with the Kyoto thing not working out so well.
A home windmill like my brother in law's produces extra,2000 square foot home with 2 kids and he's banking the extra now.
A: maybe electric cars wont work too well on colder climates
Q: What cars do the Ontario Provincial Police use?
What vehicles are currently in the OPP's Fleet
A: Yes, the OPP do have one VW Beetle. However, the majority of the patrol cars are St. Thomas, Ontario built Ford Crown Victorias, as they have been for many years.
Q: Why are used cars in Ontario so much cheaper than in Alberta?
A: My brother lives in Alberta, he said same thing. He also said the mileage is lower on cars there and in Alberta they use other substances on the road other then salt, so the cars won't have the rust corrosion.
Q: Why do some cars in Ontario have a 3-letter license while some have 4?
My father's license only has 3 letters whereas my mother's license has 4 letters.
Does anyone know what the difference is?
A: The reason some cars have 4 letters on their license plate instead of three, is because there are so many license plates issued in Ontario, that they ran out of 3 letter combinations.
Also why the GTA now has the 647 area code, they ran out of 416 numbers.
Q: In Ontario, what restrictions are there for classic cars in relations to the exhaust system?
In Ontario, Canada, what restrictions are there for a classic car (20 years or older) in reference to the exhaust?
Would it be legal to cut off the exhaust right before the cat converter and run 2.25" pipe straight back?
I know after a car is classic, there is no more e-test. I just don't know if this is legal?
A: From the Ontario Drive Clean Programme:
"Drive Clean is focusing more strongly on vehicles that are most likely to pollute and has ended the rolling exemption that allowed light-duty vehicles to leave the Drive Clean program when they are 20 years old." This is effective with the 1988 model year.
What you "know" is old news, sorry. So you have to maintain the exhaust system, unless your vehicle is 1987 or older.
However, the fact it doesn't have to pass the test doesn't mean you can just cut the converter out. Federal laws in Canada and the US state it is illegal to remove a properly functioning catalytic converter. You may remove a defective or dead converter, but, if the car came with a converter, you then have to replace it. Many motorists have put in straight pipes, and found out when they went to sell the car, they couldn't, or they got caught in a roadside safety check and were issued fix-it tickets. You can't count on getting away with thumbing your nose at the law. If your car needed a converter when it was built, it still needs it now, the engine hasn't magically changed the level of pollutants produced.
